A Push for Parity
A Push for Parity was a conceptual project aimed to tackle the issue of gender disparity in the music industry, with a focus on performing artists.
The campaign, #GirlsPlayMusic, was developed to raise awareness of the problem, through advertisements, merchandise and promotional gigs. The money raised from the events would go to a variety of causes – women’s charities, funding for local schools to promote music for girls, and proceeds to the local area of the event to set up music clubs for aspiring musicians, songwriters and sound engineers.
The accompanying application, Musiquall, offered a solution by encouraging gender-balanced listening habits amongst streaming site users by creating personalised playlists based on the user’s favourite artists.
The user is able to research the artist via a short bio page and through samples of popular songs.
Customisation of the number of songs is included in the settings, alongside the gender ratio, which ranges from 50:50 to 100:0 in favour of female inclusive acts. The playlist is then exported to the desired streaming site.
